Pakistan Institute of Living and Learning (PILL) is committed to upholding and maintaining the highest quality of academic and ethical standards in all its activities. PILL’s governance and ethics policies and procedures recognise the importance of addressing ethical matters for all research purposes. Research ethics is central to all research activities. PILL has a governance framework within which all employees of PILL must act when engaging in research or knowledge exchange.

Ethical standards, including appropriate training, expertise, and care, are strongly advocated for researchers. We endeavor to develop a robust ethical framework for researchers to avoid the risk of harm and advance best practices in research. Ethical standards confirm that research is conducted safely and meets agreed principles, standards, and codes of research practice for participants and society. 

At PILL, the research staff is regularly trained in good clinical practice (GCP) by national and international experts to keep up with the guidelines.

The Global Ethics Learning Hub (GELH) aims to oversee and provide guidance on the ethical conduct of all relevant research activities within PILL and uphold guiding principles of ethical integrity and good governance. As described in PILL’s ethics policy, GELH aims to facilitate sound decision making that respects the values, concerns, and interests of the organization and society at large.

Global Mental Health Blog

This blog is a global platform to critique and create dialogue about mental health issues that affect us globally. We endeavour to use this blog to address and recognise the ways that mental health matters to all our lives and ways that we need to collectively work to address our understanding and response in societies and healthcare settings.

Each month, members of our PILL team will be presenting their work on a particular topic. We hope that you will find the matters to be engaging and informative.

7th Global Mental Health Research Capacity and Capability Building Program in Dubai

The 7th Global Mental Health Research Training Program was held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates between February 18th-25th 2023 for mental health professionals. The agenda included a range of workshops in areas of forensic mental health, unintentional injuries particularly burns, mood disorders, psychosis spectrum disorders, grant writing, and art therapy.

BURNS Impact Assessment Session (Theory of Change)

This was held on March 16th to define the purpose, approach and scope of impact assessment, and how to measure impact for the BURNS project.

GCP Discussion Group

The Global Ethics Learning Hub (GELH) held a two-part group session in Dec 2022 and Feb 2023 to discuss the International Conference of Harmonisation (ICH) Good Clinical Practice (GCP) guideline within a culturally relevant context. The discussion was facilitated by Dr Ozlem Eylem (Assistant Director Global Mental Health Cultural Psychiatry Group, University of Manchester) while Professor Sarah Edwards (Professor of Bioethics, University College London) oversaw the session.

REC Discussion Group

On May 31st, the GELH group organised a discussion group with Research Ethics Committee (REC) members from Nigeria and Sri Lanka, to explore their views and experiences with reviewing suicide-related study applications in the context of LMICs.

PILL Research Strategy Meeting

An initiative by the Global Ethics Learning Hub (GELH) at Pakistan Institute of Living and Learning (PILL), an important discussion was facilitated by Director MGF, Dr Rakhshi Memon on March 18th 2023 to develop key principles and strategic intent to guide our research strategy pathway for 2023-2026. The team, from various PILL centres across Pakistan, engaged in productive conversations to agree goals and objectives for building our scientific evidence base. Through collaborative feedback, a successful plan-of-action was established for conducting and implementing high-quality research.
